After successfully piloting a crisis stabilization unit, Chicago-based Holy Cross Hospital is opening a new $6.5 million mental health unit that nearly triples its capacity to treat mental health emergencies, The Chicago Tribune reports.
The new unit can treat up to 32 patients, while the pilot's capacity was 12, according to the report. Psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners will provide treatment for up to 24 hours in the unit, after which the patient will be connected to other services if needed.
The aim is to reduce strain on the emergency department, where patients face long waits for treatment. The 24-hour unit will accept transfers from the ED and walk-ins, as well as those who arrive by ambulance or are brought in by police.
