The future of AI at Epic

Epic continues to focus on artificial intelligence-powered predictive models and generative AI to boost its EHR. But what comes next?

More than 400 health systems use a predictive model from Epic, while more than 170 organizations have ambient listening integrated into the EHR, according to an Aug. 16 Epic article. One tool that could be coming down the line is an AI assistant built natively into the EHR.

"Here's an example scenario: A patient is coming into an urgent care clinic after using MyChart to book an appointment," said Garrett Adams, a research and development leader at Epic, in the story. "An AI assistant in Epic determines that clinicians will need additional information to triage effectively, so it sends questions through MyChart.

"Then, using the patient's answers and other information in the chart, the assistant develops a full summary that helps the intake nurse triage effectively and helps the clinician get oriented quickly. Or, rather than prepare information for clinicians at urgent care, the assistant suggests that the patient go to a more appropriate access point, like the ED."
