ONC is sunsetting its nationwide interoperability roadmap, the agency's action map for achieving widespread data sharing across the U.S. healthcare system.
ONC released its interoperability roadmap in October 2015, with a strategic framework laid out for three time bands: 2015-17, 2018-20 and 2021-24.
"The Roadmap helped lay the groundwork and set the direction for policy development on information blocking, reducing provider burden, and nationwide, electronic health information exchange – to name a few," Deputy National Coordinator for Health IT Steve Posnack wrote in the agency's May 4 blog post.
ONC said it will instead focus on advancing health IT interoperability through the 21st Century Cures Act and its interoperability rules, which went into place in April; the 2020-25 Federal Health IT Strategic Plan; and insights from the Health IT Advisory Committee.
