Meditech integrated a prescription pricing tool from e-prescribing and medication management solutions provider DrFirst into its newest EHR, a web-based platform called Expanse.
DrFirst's myBenefitCheck is a prescription pricing tool that enables providers to check the cost of medications based on a patient's insurance coverage. Meditech said offering providers this information at the point of care will encourage them to discuss out-of-pocket prescription costs with their patients, so that patients know how much they are spending on medications before going to the pharmacy.
Meditech will also add DrFirst's electronic prior authorization tool into its Expanse EHR to allow providers to proactively initiate these requests from within the clinical workflow. With the tool, providers can check if prior authorization is required for various prescriptions and learn when a patient's insurance coverage has been approved or denied.
Together, Meditech said these tools will help providers work with patients to determine the best medication given their needs and insurance coverage. Providing cost transparency is particularly important for patients with high-deductible health plans, according to Meditech.
