Spotify to add COVID-19 advisories on podcasts to combat misinformation

Spotify said it will add a content advisory to any podcast episodes that mention COVID-19 while redirecting users to a public health site for more information, CNBC reported Jan. 30.

After Spotify faced backlash from healthcare workers, musical artists and science professionals regarding "The Joe Rogan Experience" podcast, which was accused of spreading COVID-19 misinformation, its CEO, Daniel Ek, posted new platform rules on the company's website.

"We know we have a critical role to play in supporting creator expression while balancing it with the safety of our users," Mr. Ek said. "In that role, it is important to me that we don't take on the position of being content censor while also making sure that there are rules in place and consequences for those who violate them."

Spotify's new rules will add an advisory for podcasts that mention COVID-19, which will then lead users to a COVID-19 Hub that provides resources and facts shared by physicians, scientists and public health authorities around the world.

The company hopes this will help combat misinformation regarding COVID-19.
