Facebook and Instagram are starting a subscription-based verification service to better protect users against impersonation.
The monthly subscription will cost $14.99 on iOS and Android and $11.99 on the web, according to a Feb. 19 news release from the social media platforms' parent company, Meta.
Meta Verified will be rolled out in Australia and New Zealand this week before expanding across the globe. The company says the service comes with a verified badge, customer support with a real person, proactive monitoring for impersonators, and "increased visibility and reach." This change doesn't affect accounts verified under the old requirements, which include authenticity and notability.
