How Mayo uses AI for heart disease

Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic created an AI algorithm that can take an ECG from an Apple Watch and predict if a patient has a low ejection fraction.

The health system conducted a clinical trial with more than 180 clinical care practices using Apple Watch smartwatches and ECG readings, according to a Sept. 8 YouTube video from the health system.

When the AI algorithm was applied to Apple Watch ECG recordings it was able to identify a weak heart pump in patients, allowing clinicians to get ahead of disease.

"AI is going to transform the way we practice medicine," Paul Friedman, MD, chair of cardiovascular medicine at the Mayo Clinic, said in the video. "It essentially puts an expert in the pocket of every primary care clinician."
