State Department faces systemwide email outage

The U.S. Department of State experienced a systemwide email outage to its unclassified email system Friday, according to The Hill.

The outage began Friday morning. It extended to at least Friday afternoon, an official told The Hill.

"We are working to restore service as soon as possible. Other communication systems are available and being used," the official added.

An official told Politico the outage was not caused by "external action or interference." The publication noted the Department of State attributed an unclassified email system shut-down in 2014 to routine maintenance, although later reports found the system had been compromised by hackers.
