Healthcare is one of the most highly targeted industries for cyberattacks, with hospitals as the victims of 30 percent of all large data breaches. Midsize hospitals seem to be affected disproportionately, to the tune of more than $45,000 an hour, according to a September 2021 Ipsos report.
Five other findings from the Ipsos report and cybersecurity company Critical Insight:
- Large hospitals reported that a cyberattack creates a shutdown time of 6.2 hours that costs on average $21,500 per hour.
- Midsize hospitals are suffering about twice as much as large hospitals, with an average shutdown time of 10 hours that costs $45,700 per hour according to the Ipsos report.
- About 5 percent of attacks are motivated by fun. The motive for 91 percent of hackers is financially driven. Another 4 percent of attacks are motivated by espionage, according to Critical Insight.
- Forty-nine percent of the 130 respondents to the Ipsos report said their annual compliance budget for cybersecurity wasn't sufficient.
- Healthcare cyberattacks have increased by 84 percent from 2018 to 2021, affecting 45 million individuals in 2021, according to Critical Insight.
