Cyberattack forced Michigan hospital to use paper records for 1st time in 20 years, CEO says

McLaren Port Huron Hospital was forced to use paper records for the first time in nearly two decades after a recent cyberattack, President and CEO Eric Cecava told the Port Huron Times Herald in an Aug. 28 article.

Grand Blanc, Mich.-based McLaren Health Care was hit by a ransomware attack Aug. 6 and has since restored its IT systems. The attack affected its 13 hospitals, clinics and cancer and surgery centers.

The Port Huron hospital is addressing delayed patient care and aims to catch up on all appointments by the end of the week, the Times Herald reported.

"You can imagine that we have a backlog of patient information from x-rays, CT scans, lab, etc. flowing into our health records," Mr. Cecava told the Times Herald. "Sometimes that takes a toll on the bandwidth, if you will, but everything is open, everything is going well."

The process of transferring patient information recorded on paper to its electronic systems could take several weeks, according to a statement from the system.
