More than 1,200 patients who visited Dothan, Ala.-based Flowers Hospital may be eligible to receive settlement payments resulting from a four-year-old class-action lawsuit, according to a WTVY report.
The lawsuit against the hospital stems from 2014 data breach, in which a former employee stole patient information from the hospital's laboratory to file fraudulent federal income tax returns. The employee was arrested in 2014 and served a prison sentence, the report states.
Affected patients have until Dec. 13 to file claims. If a federal judge approves the settlement, patients who filed claims would be reimbursed for out-of-pocket credit monitoring costs, receive up to four hours in lost wages and be paid interest on delayed tax refunds. The maximum award is $5,000 per person and $150,000 total for all claims.
