Rhode Island Representative Urges Insurers to Retain Physicians With Better Reimbursement

Rhode Island physicians require better reimbursement if the state hopes to recruit and retain quality providers, said Rep. Donald Lally (D.-Narragansett) and Joseph Cambio, MD, principal in Urologic Specialists of New England, in a letter to The Providence Journal.

According to the authors, Rhode Island has seen increasing difficulty in recruiting new physicians to the state. A provider shortage would mean R.I. residents would have to wait longer for appointments and could opt for out-of-state travel to pursue quality healthcare.

The letter stated that Rep. Lally and Dr. Cambio support legislation that will be submitted to the General Assembly in 2011 that would require insurance companies to reimburse physicians at least 125 percent of Medicare rates. While the rate would not cover the cost of care, it would represent an increase from current insurer rates and make Rhode Island rates more comparable to those in Massachusetts and Connecticut, the letter said.
