NP/PAs report more earnings, gender wage gap persists, study says

More than half of all nurse practitioners and physician assistants (51.2 percent and 53.7 percent, respectively) reported earning more in 2018-19 than in the prior year, according to Clinical Advisor's 2019 NP/PA Salary Survey. 

 NPs and PAs reported average annual salaries in the 2019 survey of $107,973 and $115,881, respectively. 

Results also showed a narrowing wage gap between male and female advanced practice providers. In 2018, men earned approximately $17,000 more than their female counterparts. The 2019 survey reports that male NPs earned approximately $11,000 more than female NPs, and male PAs earned an estimated $15,000 more than female PAs.

  • Pediatrics -- $116,806
  • Psychiatry -- $109,000
  • Adult medicine -- $120,577
  • Primary care -- $120,887
  • Urgent care -- $125,281
  • Geriatric medicine -- $165,833
  • Other -- $112,730

Average NP salary by practice setting: 

  • Family medicine $102,158
  • Pediatrics -- $97,160
  • Psychiatry -- $130,382
  • Adult medicine -- $107,672
  • Primary care -- $104,032
  • Urgent care -- $116,293
  • Geriatric medicine -- $112,177
  • Other -- $110,096
