In Which Regions Do Physicians Earn More?

Physician compensation can vary significantly based on geographic setting and department rank, according to a news release from the Medical Group Management Association.

• Dermatologists in academic settings reported a median compensation of $277,765 in the Midwest. That figure was $234,936 for dermatologists in academic settings in the Western region.

• General pediatricians in the Eastern section reported $157,289 in median compensation while the same group in the Southern section reported median salaries of $139,410.

• Urologists in the Midwest reported $300,000 in median compensation compared with $445,247 for their Western counterparts.

There were also differences in compensation based physicians' rank in the academic setting:

• Primary care associate professors earned $173,963 in median compensation while professors reported median compensation of $198,000. Primary care department chairs reported median compensation of $282,296.

• Specialty care associate professors earned $260,075, professors earned $280,000 and specialty care department chairs earned $506,200.

• Physician compensation in academic settings is still lower than that of physicians in private practice: family practitioners in academic settings reported median compensation of $178,801 while those in private practice reported earnings of $189,402.
