2. Thomas Frist, MD, $11.6 billion: Dr. Frist controls about 20 percent of Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare.
3. Dilip Shanghvi, $8.26 billion: Mr. Shanghvi is the founder and largest shareholder of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries in Mumbai. Sun Pharmaceutical is the world's fourth-largest generic drugmaker.
4. Cyrus Poonawalla, $8.06 billion: Mr. Poonawalla is chairman of one of the world's largest vaccine makers: the Serum Institute of India.
5. Patrick Soon-Shiong, MD, $7.64 billion: Dr. Soon-Shiong became a billionaire after selling APP Pharmaceuticals and Abraxis BioScience. He owns the Los Angeles Times.
6. Reinhold Schmieding, $6.94 billion: Mr. Schmieding is the founder and president of Naples, Fla.-based surgical device maker Arthrex.
7. Hansjoerg Wyss, $6.65 billion: Mr. Wyss helped build Swiss device company Synthes. Johnson & Johnson bought Synthes for $19.7 billion in 2012.
8. Seo Jung-jin, $6.62 billion: Mr. Jung-jin is the founder and chairman of South Korea-based Celltrion. Celltrion is a manufacturer of generic medical products made from living cells.
9. Frederik Paulsen, $6.55 billion: Mr. Paulsen is the owner and chairman of Saint-Prex, Switzerland-based drugmaker Ferring.
10. Sun Piaoyang, $6.08 billion: Mr. Piaoyang is the chairman of Chinese anti-cancer drugmaker Jiangsu Hengrui Medicine.
