Family Physicians Earn Half as Much as Interventional Diagnostic Radiologists

The compensation gap between specialty physicians and primary care physicians continues to grow, as family medicine physicians earned about two-and-a-half times less than interventional diagnostic radiologists, according to a Washington Post report.

In 2011, family medicine physicians earned roughly $208,658 per year. Interventional diagnostic radiologists made about $492,102, according to the report.

Internists were not far behind family physicians in pay, as they averaged $219,500 in 2011. Other high-earning specialists included cardiologists ($422,921) and anesthesiologists ($372,750).

Additionally, there is expected to be a shortfall of 130,600 physicians across all specialties by 2025.
