Compensation Questioned at PeaceHealth Hospitals in Washington

A recent letter to the editor in the Bellingham Herald criticized the pay of PeaceHealth CEO and President Alan Yordy and Bellingham, Wash.-based PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center CEO Nancy Steiger.

The author indicated that Mr. Yordy received $1.17 million in total compensation in 2009, up 31 percent from his 2008 total, and Ms. Steiger received $574,195. However, nurses only received a 0.07 percent raise.

The author then stated that increasing executive pay while keeping down the compensation of other staff does not mitigate rising healthcare costs "nor does it create more competent executives," according to the letter.
