Seventy-six percent of hospitals said they pay their CEO a bonus, with the average bonus for a hospital CEO at just over one-third (33.2 percent) of their base salary, according to a report published by Total Compensation Solutions.
The 2018 Hospital Executive Compensation Report gathered data from 1,332 hospitals across the country, 27 executive and director level job titles and compensation data for roughly 5,000 executives.
"We saw a wide range of bonuses from 0 percent to 269 percent of base salary with approximately 76 percent of hospitals reporting they actually pay their CEO a bonus," said Tom Bailey, TCS project manager.
The report found one of the strongest indicators for determining bonus amounts paid to hospital CEOs is revenue size in addition to standard performance metrics used in the hospital industry.
TCS also looked at the average bonuses for five other top executive positions, which ranged from 19.2 percent to 30.6 percent of base salary (excluding the CEO).
Here are the average bonuses paid as a percentage of base salary for the six top hospital executive positions included in the report.
CEO: 33.2 percent
Top legal officer: 30.6 percent
CMO: 23 percent
COO: 22.9 percent
CFO: 21.8 percent
Chief nursing officer: 19.2 percent
