Along with orthopedic surgeons, radiologists were among the highest compensated physician specialists in 2010, earning an average of $350,000 per year, according to Medscape's 2011 Physician Compensation Survey.

Here are nine statistics on radiologist compensation for 2010 from Medscape's survey:

•    Median annual compensation of all radiologists:  $350,000
•    Percentage of radiologists who made $400,000 or more:  39 percent
•    Median annual compensation of male radiologists:  $360,000
•    Median annual compensation of female radiologists:  $320,000
•    Highest-paying region:  Great Lakes ($400,000)
•    Lowest-paying region:  Mid-Atlantic ($322,000)
•    Percentage of radiologists who invest in ASCs:  9 percent
•    Percentage of radiologists who are considering investing in ASCs:  54 percent
•    Percentage of radiologists who saw a decline in compensation from 2009:  39 percent
