Some of the country's highest-paid health system executives earn up to $17 million a year, according to a Business Journals analysis.
Business Journals looked at the latest-available tax returns, regulatory filings and public payroll records submitted by hospitals and health systems in major U.S. metropolitan areas.
The analysis does not include all healthcare executives in U.S. hospital systems and does not account for income earned by employees from outside sources, including drug companies, medical device makers and product royalties.
Here are the five top-paid healthcare executives, according to Business Journals:
1. R. Milton Johnson, chairman and CEO, HCA Healthcare (Nashville, Tenn.)
Total compensation: $17,268,724
2. Patrick Fry, CEO (partial year; retired), Sutter Health (Sacramento, Calif.)
Total compensation: $15,450,002
3. Tony Tersigni, president and CEO, Ascension (St. Louis)
Total compensation: $13,933,318
4. Bernard J. Tyson, CEO, Kaiser Permanente (Oakland, Calif.)
Total compensation: $10,039,235
5. Samuel Hazen, president and COO, HCA Healthcare
Total compensation: $9,529,878
