CMS Releases Final Rule on Provider Ordering Documentation

CMS has released a final rule to ensure only qualified and identifiable providers can order or certify certain medical services, equipment and supplies for people with Medicare — a law expected to save nearly $1.6 billion over 10 years.

Under the rule, CMS will verify the credentials of providers ordering or certifying equipment and supplies to ensure Medicare beneficiaries receive quality care.

All providers and suppliers who qualified for National Provider Identification are required to include their NPI on enrollment applications for Medicare and Medicaid, as well as all reimbursement claims. This is intended to give CMS and states the ability to link specific claims to the ordering or certifying physician to check for any suspicious ordering activity.
