The University of Tennessee Medical Center Health Information Center in Knoxville is preparing to host the state's first ever Health Literacy Forum to help American adults understand or act on the health information they receive.
Health literacy is crucial to achieving excellent patient outcomes, according to UT Medical Center. To improve this knowledge base in the community, the medical center opened its Health Information Center in September 2014. The center offers a free, extensive consumer health library, virtual and printed resources and walk-in assistance with dedicated medical librarians and library associates who are certified health information specialists and can help people research specific health conditions.
Now, UT Medical Center is taking it one step further with the Health Literacy Forum, which is scheduled to take place Nov. 9 and will feature keynote speaker Cynthia Baur, PhD, senior advisor for health literacy and plain language for the CDC.
Roughly 200 people, including healthcare professionals, educators, librarians and leaders in government and business are expected to attend the Health Literacy Forum in November.
