Staten Island (N.Y.) University Hospital, part of New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health, will discontinue an overnight ambulance tour that operates south of the Huguenot neighborhood on the South Shore of Staten Island, a hospital spokesperson confirmed to Becker's June 26.
A statement from the hospital says the decision to modify one of the shifts that runs through the New York City Fire Department emergency medical services system came after thorough review.
"This has been a grossly underutilized shift that we run to supplement the FDNY system. We are continually exploring methods to better serve the community and to enhance Staten Islanders' ability to access the care they need," the hospital said. "Discussions were had with FDNY regarding this change so they can evaluate if an adjustment was needed for their deployment."
SIUH is a 668-bed specialized teaching hospital with two main campuses and various community-based health centers and laboratories, according to its website.
