The University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie, Md., has opened a 22-room critical care unit to support the estimated 2,800 patients who receive critical care at the hospital each year.
The new space features 22 private patient rooms with space for visitors, a pharmacy unit, and two resuscitation rooms with space for more than 10 providers at a time. The unit is equipped with advanced medical technology to coordinate care more efficiently, including bedside monitors that continuously track and transmit patient data to a command center, according to a Dec. 6 news release.
"This advanced technology is giving our care team instant information that can be used to quickly make life-saving decisions," Jean Jauregui, DNP, the hospital's director of nursing for critical and intermediate care, said in a news release. "Instead of relying on old, point-in-time data, we are getting a real-time feed that alerts us when we need to act. This increases our team's efficiency and helps us provide timely, high-quality and safe care."
