Infants in some Baltimore neighborhoods, separated by just a few subway stops, are more likely to die in their first year of life than babies born in Honduras and West Bank, according to a recent report from Vox.
In these neighborhoods, specifically Little Italy and Greenmount East, the infant mortality rate is above 20 deaths per 1,000 births, according to the report. This is much higher than the national average of 6.1 deaths per 1,000 births and significantly higher than countries like France, which reported an infant mortality rate of 3.5 in 2012.
These neighborhoods are among the poorest in Baltimore, but infant mortality disparities may also be caused by health insurance status, according to the report.
