IBM and Troy, N.Y.-based Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will establish a new research facility — the Center for Health Empowerment by Analytics, Learning and Semantics — on the university's campus.
The HEALS center is a five-year collaborative effort to study preventive healthcare for chronic diseases. IBM and RPI researchers will use IBM Watson to create new computing techniques that identify patients at risk of developing a chronic disease, such as diabetes or hypertension. The researchers will provide these patients personalized health recommendations and lifestyle guidance to proactively manage the condition.
The HEALS center is part of IBM's Cognitive Horizons Network, which connects universities with IBM cognitive computing services to accelerate technology development.
