COVID-19 outbreak leads Oregon psychiatric hospital to pause admissions

Oregon State Hospital in Salem has paused admissions to protect patients as it deals with a COVID-19 outbreak.

The hospital has had 29 new COVID-19 patients since Dec. 29, according to a Jan. 4 letter to stakeholders. Thirty-two employees have also tested positive since Dec. 27.

Nonurgent medical and dental clinic appointments are being rescheduled, and the hospital is not allowing patients to interact with one another.

"A little over half of the positive patients are symptomatic," the letter said. "Many of the positive cases are vaccinated but none have had booster doses. Patients on the primary outbreak units who had boosters did not test positive, pointing to the effectiveness of boosters."
