Chicago physician leads free 'Walk with a Doc' event to promote healthy living

It was a chilly day in Chicago on Saturday, but that didn't stop Rush University Medical Center endocrinologist Elizabeth McAninch, MD, from leading the city's first "Walk with a Doc" program.

"Walk with a Doc" is an hour-long walking program to promote taking steps toward a healthier lifestyle. Although Dr. McAninch led the first program in Chicago, there are more than 190 active programs across the nation.

"I almost always recommend physical activity and exercise to my patients," said Dr. McAninch. "You don't need to be a marathon runner to benefit from exercise. The simple act of walking can have striking health benefits. Many conditions such as fatigue, pain, insulin resistance and depression can be improved by simply increasing or initiating physical activity."

Along the way, Dr. McAninch spoke with participants about insulin resistance, weight gain and obesity, diabetes and hypothyroidism.
