A new program at the Stony Brook (N.Y.) Heart Institute is designed to care for patients with cardiogenic shock, the leading cause of death after a severe heart attack.
The Cardiogenic Shock Program is a comprehensive program that quickly brings together a multidisciplinary team of cardiac care experts in areas such as critical care, heart failure, interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery to care for critically sick patients.
"We have 24/7 access to surgical procedures, including coronary artery bypass surgery, surgery to repair an injury to the heart valves and the aorta, and ventricular assist device support," Henry Tannous, MD, co-director of the institute, said in a July 27 news release.
The Stony Brook Cardiogenic Shock Program is one of only a few such programs across the nation.
