U of Iowa plans new primary care services in underserved section of Iowa City

University of Iowa Health Care plans to add primary care services in an underserved area of Iowa City, adding to its more than $1 billion in new construction projects.

Once complete, the planned southeast Iowa City facility will house most of the primary care services currently located on the main campus of the UI health system, according to a Jan. 18 release.

The southeast side of Iowa City is the most densely populated area in the city but has the fewest primary care options, the system said. Many local residents therefore currently have to travel outside of their immediate community to access basic care.

"In order to build strong neighborhoods and a healthy community, we need to make sure everyone has access to high-quality health care," Bruce Teague, Iowa City mayor at large, said in a statement. "By placing primary care services in this currently underserved neighborhood, we can have a positive impact on the health of our community for years to come."

The new project should be completed by 2025.
