South Carolina system looks to build $277M hospital

Charleston, S.C.-based Trident Medical Center is looking to build a $277 million hospital on Johns Island, S.C., local news outlet WCBD reported Aug. 17.

The hospital submitted to the state a certificate of need outlining plans for a 50-bed hospital. The hospital would include space to expand to 150 beds. Hospital leaders say the facility will create nearly 300 jobs and pay $70 million in salaries, wages and benefits.

"Currently, on Johns Island and neighboring communities, it can take residents 30 to 45 minutes to drive to their nearest hospital, and often longer in heavy traffic and inclement weather," Trident Health President and CEO Christina Oh told WCBD. "Our goal is to increase access to timely, high quality, and affordable health care services."
