Residents protest to block new UPMC hospital from their neighborhood

Residents of Jefferson Hills, Pa., are campaigning to keep a new UPMC hospital out of their neighborhood, reports KDKA, Pittsburgh's local CBS channel.

A group of about 100 neighbors formed a coalition, hired an attorney and created a petition to block the development, which now has more than 500 signatures, according to the report. They oppose the new hospital because of its location — they want their neighborhood to stay peaceful and quiet. Residents told KDKA they don't mind having the hospital in the area but would prefer it be built on land that is already developed, like a nearby mall.

UPMC provided KDKA the following statement:

"UPMC is thriving as the region's dominant and most-preferred provider and we will ensure that our patients, insurance plan members and employees have full and convenient access to UPMC's world-class care near where they live and work."
