Northside Hospital gets permission to build 17-story tower all at once: report

Northside Hospital will be building more of the new tower at its Gwinnett campus 30 miles from downtown Atlanta than previously announced in a move that will make the Lawrenceville site the largest campus in the hospital system, according to a Dec. 10 Gwinnett Daily Post report.

The Georgia Department of Community Health gave Northside the green light Dec. 7, the report said, adding permission for seven more stories to be built in one go as opposed to phases. While the tower was always intended to be 17 stories, only 10 were previously approved for construction at one time. The tower will add 146 beds for a total capacity of 696 beds at the hospital, making it the largest Northside facility compared with its 622-bed location in Atlanta.

The newly completed tower is expected to compete for the title of being the tallest building in Gwinnett County at a height of 257 feet and 6 inches.

The expansion at Northside comes amid healthcare facilities in the Atlanta area struggling to mitigate the effects of the closure of the Wellstar Medical Center Nov. 1.
