Georgia regulators greenlighted Piedmont Athens (Ga.) Regional Medical Center's $171 million expansion and renovation project, according to the Athens Banner Herald.
The Georgia Department of Community Health issued Piedmont Athens the required certificate of need for the project that will update the hospital's technology, renovate patient care areas and replace a patient tower.
The project calls for the renovation of about 262,400-square-feet of existing space and the replacement of its 100-year-old, four-story patient tower. The replacement tower will be seven stories.
When the project is complete, the hospital will still have 359 beds.
The project will be split up into several phases. The entire project is expected to take four to five years.
