Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, along with the City Colleges of Chicago, the University of Chicago, and the University of Chicago Medical Center, have shared plans to expand healthcare programs and facilities on the city's South Side.
Under the partnership, Kennedy-King College, located in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood, will offer an associate degree in nursing and a licensed practical nursing program run by Kennedy-King College's Malcolm X College. General education courses and a basic nursing assistant program will also be operated by Kennedy-King College, according to a March 5 news release obtained by Becker's.
The Kennedy-King College nursing programs are expected to pave the way for around 50 basic nursing assistant students by this fall, 50 future nursing associate degree earners by 2026, 10 licensed practical nurse students by 2026, and 100 nursing associate degree earners by 2028.
The construction of two new facilities is also part of the expanded partnership. The facilities are UChicago Medicine Clinical Labs, which is owned and operated by UChicago Medicine, and the Malcolm X College Learning Center, which is owned and operated by City Colleges.
The facilities, which will be located in Chicago's Washington Park, will bring around 600 new jobs.
