CentraCare embarks on $230M expansion

CentraCare is investing nearly $230 million on expansion projects at two outpatient campuses,  the St. Cloud, Minn.-based system said in an Aug. 28 news release.

Construction began in June on a $194.3 million project at CentraCare Plaza. The 175,000-square-foot expansion will create more space to support the growth of several specialties, including orthopedics and neurosciences. The project will add a new outpatient rehabilitation facility and additional operating and procedure rooms at the existing ambulatory surgery center.

In September, construction is slated to begin on a $34.5 million addition to CentraCare Sauk Crossing, which currently houses the CentraCare eye clinic. As part of the expansion, the system will move a clinic, lab and imaging services from another location to the Sauk Crossing building.

The expansions are in response to "the changing needs of our patients" and will support the organization's future success, CentraCare said. The projects reflect the latest example of health systems increasing their investments in outpatient care, with many leaders anticipating a future where hospitals will care primarily for high acuity patients.

CentraCare did not state when the projects are expected to be complete.
