Alabama hospital to build $6M cardiovascular unit

Alabaster, Ala.-based Shelby Baptist Medical Center is slated to build a $6 million cardiovascular unit, the Shelby County Reporter reported Aug. 22.

The new unit will feature 14 beds, six of which will be ICU beds and eight of which will be stepdown beds. It is slated to open in December. Shelby Baptist is part of Birmingham, Ala.-based Brookwood Baptist Health.

Construction began in May and the hospital's entire second floor, where the cardiovascular unit will be located, has been rebuilt. The hospital's ICU will be connected to the new cardiovascular unit so patients can have the same set of nurses while receiving care.

"These improvements increase our flexibility in how we treat our cardiac patients and allow us to create an even more specialized patient care team," Jeremy Clark, Brookwood Baptist Health CEO, told the publication.
