6 hospitals planning facility upgrades, expansions

The following hospitals announced or completed plans in the last week to expand, upgrade or renovate their facilities.

1. Lee Health board approves $306M hospital expansion project
Fort Myers, Fla.-based Lee Health's board of directors approved a $306 million expansion project for Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers.

2. Massachusetts council approves North Shore Medical Center's scaled-down $168M expansion
Massachusetts Public Health Council approved Boston-based North Shore Medical Center's scaled-back $168 million expansion at Salem (Mass.) Hospital.

3. Pana Community Hospital to start $20M expansion project
Pana (Ill.) Community Hospital is set to begin its $20.1 million expansion project to make the facility more convenient, comfortable and attractive for patients and staff.

4. Ochsner Health System opens new facility between New Orleans and Baton Rouge
Ochsner Health Center-River Parishes opened in LaPlace, La., Tuesday.

5. University of Hawaii medical school to establish diabetes research center after $11.2M federal grant
Honolulu-based University of Hawaii's John A. Burns School of Medicine will establish a diabetes research center thanks to an $11.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.

6. US Senate approves legislation enabling construction of 7 new VA clinics in Florida
The U.S. Senate approved legislation that enables Florida to establish seven new Veterans Affairs medical facilities in the state.
