A tornado struck Sioux Falls, S.D., late Tuesday night damaging two Avera Health hospitals in its path, according to the Argus Leader.
The tornado ripped off part of the Avera Behavioral Health Hospital's roof and damaged the building's windows."Seven behavioral health patients have been transferred," Avera spokesperson Michelle Pellman told the publication.
Only one patient was injured, and it was not life-threatening, Ms. Pellman said.
Another spokesperson from the hospital told the Argus Leader in a tweet that the hospital will likely remain closed for three to six months because of the damage.
Avera's Heart Hospital also suffered significant damage to its lobby and windows, Ms. Pellman said. All patients are safe, but people should stay away from the area due to flooding and debris, she said.
Avera Heart Hospital's CEO, Mick Gibbs, and President David Flicek commended staff for their storm response.
Mr. Gibbs tweeted the Argus Leader that one physician performed emergency heart surgery on a patient during the storm, and Mr. Flicek said staff transferred 102 patients to a safe area in the facility in 10 minutes.
