Automated Capacity Management Aids Hospital Disaster Preparedness

In a recent TeleTracking blog, Paige Patterson, RN, a relief hospital manager at University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, discussed the value of having an automated capacity management system in place when dealing with a crisis.

While dealing with the aftermath of the mass shooting that occurred at an Aurora movie theater last June, UCH had used TeleTracking's capacity management system, according to Ms. Patterson. The system allowed the hospital staff to know, in real-time, exactly how many victims it could safely handle in the immediate aftermath of the shootings. The staff could then relay this information to the police and emergency medical technician personnel. The system also allowed hospital staff to track the location and status of the patients in real time.

Ultimately, capacity management systems and automation have an important role to play in hospital preparedness for public health emergencies, according to the blog.
