84% of Emergency Physicians Report Using ER Space to Hold Psych Patients

According to a recent survey of emergency physicians administered by the American College of Emergency Physicians, 84 percent report psychiatric patients are held in their emergency departments.

Of those who reported the practice, 91 percent also reported boarding psychiatric patients in the ED has led to bed shortages, distracted staff or violent behavior on the part of the psychiatric patients.

Of all physicians surveyed, more than half reported increases in ED resources used to transfer and/or admit psychiatric patients since January 2014, according to a news release.
