4 Most Common Barriers to Centralizing the Patient Placement Process

A decentralized patient placement process results in numerous problems, including long wait times in the emergency department, patients leaving without being seen, delayed discharge notifications and delayed or cancelled operating room procedures, according to a TeleTracking blog post.

Centralizing the patient placement process at a healthcare organization can help relieve the aforementioned problems. However, healthcare facilities need to overcome the barriers to supporting a centralized patient placement model.

A recent TeleTracking blog post also discusses the four most common barriers to a centralized model, according to The Next Generation Capacity Management Advisory Board:

1. Inability to ensure appropriate inpatient admits under the two-midnight rule.
2. Failure to quickly obtain inpatient order.
3. Lack of centralized bed placement.
4. Suboptimal use of existing technology.
