Oscar Munoz, CEO of United Airlines, received nearly half the total compensation in 2017 as he did in 2016 after suggesting to the company's compensation committee that he forego a bonus, according to CNBC.
Mr. Munoz's total 2017 pay was $9.56 million after earning $18.7 million in 2016, according to Skift.
"I felt it was important to send a message about the culture of accountability and integrity that we are building here as a United team," Mr. Munoz said in a letter to employees, according to CNBC. "We had some incredible successes in 2017, but also some setbacks."
Robert Milton, the chairman of the airline's parent company, United Continental Holdings, will not seek reelection as the board is reduced from 16 to 14 members.
