Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston is celebrating its bicentennial this year, marking 200 years of notable medical accomplishments from the third oldest general hospital in the country, according to a MGH news release.
Last fall, the 907-bed hospital broke ground on the Museum of Medical History and Innovation, which is expected to open in late 2011. The museum will highlight MGH's innovations and achievements, which include the creation of the country's first X-ray exposure and the first use of proton beam therapy to treat tumors of the eye, neck and brain, among others.
"MGH's bicentennial year offers the opportunity to reflect on our rich history, as well as reaffirm our commitments to providing the highest standards of patient care both in our local communities and globally as a leader in scientific discovery, innovation, and medical education," MGH President Peter L. Slavin, MD, said in the release.
