More Research Needed on Anesthesia Groups' Business Strategies

More research is needed on strategic decisions by anesthesiology groups, according to a study published in Anesthesia and Analgesia.

Researchers performed a needs assessment for anesthesia business strategy based on Porter's Five Forces Analysis. Through a literature review, they found little previous research for two forces — threat of new entrants and bargaining power of suppliers — and modest understanding for one force — threat of substitute products or services. There was substantial understanding, however, of the two remaining forces: bargaining power of customers and jockeying for position among current competitors.

The authors suggest a need for additional research on strategic decisions influencing anesthesia groups, particularly focusing on the threat of new entrants, bargaining power of suppliers and threat of substitute products or services.
