FDA Provides New Updates to Propofol Shortage, Including Authorized Generics

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration released updates to the availability of propofol injections on its Web site.

According to the FDA, Teva Pharmaceuticals does not currently have propofol available. Hospira Pharmaceuticals also reports they have addressed the issue that led to the recall last year and are working to restore availability.

APP is launching an FDA-approved, authorized generic propofol (10 mg/mL) injection which, in combination with weekly releases of Diprivan (propofol), and should help to address the ongoing shortage of propofol products. APP is also continuing to ship approved Diprivan vials.

NDC numbers for the approved APP authorized generic and Diprivan are available on the FTC's Web site.

APP has also instituted the following procedures when ordering APP's propofol and/or Diprivan, according to the FDA:

  • Wholesalers can place drop ship orders on a customer's behalf directly with APP.
  • Customers can order directly from APP by contacting Customer Service at 1-888-386-1300 between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. CST.
