In addition to requesting a continuation of the meaningful use hardship exemption for anesthesiologists, the American Society of Anesthesiologists has also urged the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology to provide exemptions for clinical summaries, electronic health copies and more.
ASA is also asking for an exemption in implementing drug-to-drug and drug-to-allergy interaction checks. These requested exemptions are aimed to help anesthesiologists reasonably achieve meaningful use and share meaningful data, according to the report.
ASA also teamed with a coalition of physicians specialties to raise concerns about the newest phase of meaningful use criteria, stating that many EHR systems do not work in a way that meets meaningful use requirements or patient needs.
