A recent study in Health Affairs revealed that 51 percent of ACOs were physician-led last year.
The survey also found that 33 percent of ACOs are jointly led by physicians and hospitals. Furthermore, 78 percent of ACOs have a majority of physicians on the governing board.
The National Survey of Accountable Care Organizations was a survey that reached both public and private ACOs between October of 2012 and May of 2013.
As the country moves away from fee-for-service payment, quality care cannot occur without "strong, effective leadership from physicians," according to the study.
