Physician Familiarity With ACOs is High in Massachusetts

Nearly three-quarters — 71 percent — of physicians in Massachusetts are either very or somewhat familiar with accountable care organizations, according to the Massachusetts Medical Society's "2013 Physician Workforce Study."

Of the physicians who were familiar with ACOs, 42 percent are currently participating in one. More primary care physicians (49 percent) were part of an ACO than specialists (38 percent). MMS' study data is based on a survey of practicing physicians across the state.

The level of physician familiarity with ACOs in Massachusetts is higher than physicians nationwide — according to a recent athenahealth survey, 65 percent of physicians indicated they either participated in an ACO or were somewhat or very familiar with the model.
