According to the Growth and Dispersion of Accountable Care Organizations June 2014 Update by Leavitt Partners, the total number of ACO-covered lives has now increased to more than 20 million.
The majority of ACO-covered lives are under commercial ACO contracts, followed by the Medicare Shared Savings Program, the Pioneer ACO program and Medicaid ACOs.
ACO-covered lives are concentrated in high-density populations and in states with Medicaid ACO legislation, according to the study.
As of May 2014, Leavitt Partners has tracked 626 ACOs across the country; 329 of which have government contracts, 210 have commercial contracts and 74 have both. The 13 ACOs that remain have not yet made specific announcement about their contracts or are still in the finalizing process.
